Although Italy is a country with a high seismic risk, until the 80s it was built without following criteria of seismic design. In fact, it was only in 2009 that the Technical Standards for Construction were defined and made mandatory.
La prevention , seismic safety, as well as the reduction of seismic risk of existing buildings is a particularly important issue for Italy, and must be addressed with the utmost urgency.
In fact, most of the Italian built heritage was built without the adoption of anti-seismic criteria, or with obsolete approaches. This situation is found for both civil and productive buildings and endangers the safety of people, causes the unavailability or destruction of the structures, produces significant economic damage to all citizens and to the State.
These are the reasons that must lead to maneuvers (Sissabonus) aimed at encouraging interventions for the improvement or seismic adaptation of existing buildings, so as to reduce risks for the future, protect the well-being of all and the value of the entire real estate assets.
What are the anti-seismic design interventions envisaged by the Technical Regulations for Construction?
The Technical Standards for Construction define the possible types of intervention to be used on existing buildings, in detail we talk about: repair or local interventions, seismic improvement interventions, seismic adaptation interventions.
Local or repair work.
Repairs or local interventions are those that affect individual structural elements and which, in any case, do not reduce the pre-existing safety conditions. These interventions, also known as seismic safety interventions, are aimed at safeguarding the integrity of a building to avoid further damage or collapses.
Seismic improvement interventions.
The seismic improvement interventions are aimed at increasing the structural safety of the existing building allowing to increase the performance of a structure in the event of an earthquake. Improvement interventions are traditionally invasive both economically and logistically (stop of activities inside the building, evictions, ...).
For these reasons ISAAC has developed the new technology ISAAC for seismic protection of existing buildings. The ISAAC system, in fact, is not invasive and requires reduced installation times.
Seismic adaptation interventions.
We speak of seismic adaptation when the pre-existing structural safety is increased, achieving the safety levels imposed by the legislation. This type of intervention is generally complex at the design level, requires ad hoc studies, and is very expensive. Therefore, at times, the demolition of the building itself is favored.
It is for these reasons that ISAAC has decided to offer a standard solution with its system: a device non-invasive which independently identifies and protects the structure in the event of an earthquake.
