EXECUTIVE PROJECT
GENOA – NEW PORT CONTROL TOWER
TYPE OF BUILDING (RESIDENTIAL, PUBLIC, ETC.) | Pilots Tower of the Port of Genoa |
YEAR OF CONSTRUCTION | 2024 |
Location | Port of Genoa |
CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL | Steel |
FLOORS AND SQ M | Port control tower: single floor – Floor space of the cabin: 52.6 sq m Covering: roof – Total floor space: 784 sq m |
Customer’s objective to be met | Ensure the comfort and habitability of the pilots cabin, by reducing the tower’s swaying to an acceleration level of <8 cm/s2 even in case of extreme weather events with a return time of 200 years. |
THE TARGET | The client requested the installation of dissipation systems that increase damping of the tower itself, guaranteeing its habitability by the pilots. |
NO. OF MACHINES INSTALLED | 4 machines (2 in X direction and 2 in Y direction) |
Retrofit solutions in partnership to achieve the goal | The 4 machines (Active Mass Dampers) installed are able to guarantee the habitability of the tower without the need for auxiliary interventions. Some beams interfacing with the structure have been designed together with the company |
Short generic description of the project | The project aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Active Mass Damper system, installed on the roof of the tower, in lowering tower oscillations when subjected to strong wind pressure. From an initial peak acceleration level equal to 0.58 m/s2 with project wind with return time 200 years the value was obtained by means of wind tunnel testing of the structure at full scale; with the use of 4 AMDs, an acceleration level in the cabin of less than 0.08 m/s2 RMS is guaranteed. This allows the habitability of a structure used for work such as the pilots cabin of the port control tower, according to CNR-DT-207-R1-2018. |
